WELCOME

The LMS Physical Education department welcomes you to a new school year.  We hope all of you had an enjoyable summer and are ready to get this school year off to a great start. 

Our Physical Education staff consists of nine teachers whose responsibilities include teaching all of the physical education and health classes throughout the year.  We will provide your child with a variety of activities including individual and team sports in addition to one 4-week unit of health instruction for our 7th and 8th graders.  Our hope is that by providing our students with a wide variety of activities they will develop lifelong health and fitness habits. We are looking forward to a great year!


GOALS & PURPOSE

The 2016-2017 Physical Education goals for 6th, 7th, and 8th grades are designed to emphasize the mental, emotional, and social aspects of living, as well as physical development for the energetic middle school student.

OBJECTIVES

To participate in a variety of physical activities that will lead to the development of   coordination, strength, endurance, and specific sports skills.

To develop a commitment to personal lifetime fitness.

To develop positive attitudes to maintain physical, social, emotional, and mental health.

To understand the components of fitness and the benefits of exercise.


COURSE EXPECTATIONS

1.  Each student is required to wear appropriate physical education clothing.  Boots, cropped tops or tank tops, head covering and hats are not allowed.  Students are required to wear a white T-shirt, blue shorts, and socks to physical education class OR any color Ladue Logo clothing.  Students are required to have their clothing clearly marked with last names on the outside front of T-shirt and on the tag of their shorts.    Students should neither borrow clothing from or loan gym clothing to another student.  Students will NOT be allowed to participate in the current unit without a change of clothing, however students will be expected to be in their attendance rows and participate in the daily warm-ups.  If students forget clothing, they may check out a pair of shorts and a T-shirt from their teacher for that day (if available) so they can participate.  The first time students borrow clothes they will receive a warning.  The second time students borrow clothes their citizenship grade will be lowered.  Students will only be allowed to check out clothing two times in a quarter.  During each quarter, if a student accumulates two “Unprepareds” a parent will be contacted by the teacher.  On the third “Unprepared” an after school detention will be assigned and a parent will be contacted by the teacher.  On the fourth “Unprepared” an after school detention will be assigned and a parent will be contacted by the teacher.  Thereafter, a student will be assigned to lunch support to complete a written assignment.

2.  A students may be excused from participating due to illness or injury up to two days by a parent or guardian.  The student, however, will be expected to dress out and participate to the best of his/her ability.  The note must be given to the instructor prior to the beginning of class.  Thereafter, a doctor’s excuse is required with the date the student can return to normal activity.  Students with long-term excuses will be given an alternate assignment to be completed upon their return to physical education class.

3.  If students are absent from class more than three excused times per quarter, they will be responsible for making up those classes in order to earn their daily points.  It is the responsibility of students to make arrangements with their teacher within one week of being absent.  If a student is attending a school function she/he is excused.  If a teacher writes a request for a student during Physical Education time, it needs to be signed by a Physical Education instructor PRIOR to class for the student to be excused.

4.  Students are expected to be on time in the locker room and to the designated activity area.  Students will remain in the designated area until dismissed by the instructor.  Tardies will be assigned in accordance with the student handbook.

5.  A health unit is required of all students.  Students will be pulled out during their physical education time for four weeks for this unit.  The health instructor will explain the grading policy during the beginning of each health section.  A new course expectation form will be brought home which will need to be signed and returned.


OTHER POLICIES

1.  For health and safety reasons gum/candy/food are not allowed in physical education class or locker rooms.  Jewelry should not be worn to physical education class do to safety concerns.  Locks and lockers are provided for security of personal belongings.  It is each student’s responsibility to keep his/her locker locked at all times.  The locker-room doors are not locked in between classes. Anything not secured in a locked locker could possibly be stolen.  Students are not allowed to bring personal locks.  Lost locks are replaced at a $7.00 cost to be paid by the student.

2.  Personal hygiene items in plastic containers should remain in lockers.  NO GLASS CONTAINERS are allowed in the locker rooms.  All students are encouraged to keep extra deodorant in their physical education classes to be used before and/or after class.

GRADING PROCEDURES

  1. Academic grades will be based on class participation, health, and fitness assessments.  A point system determines each quarter grade.  For our 7th and 8th graders, each quarter 40% of the grade is based on participation, 40% of the grade will be for health, 20% will be for Fitness testing.

For our 6th graders, each quarter 80% of the grade is based on participation and 20% will be for Fitness testing. Students who are excused from participating will be given an alternate activity in order to keep their points.

*Citizenship grades for Physical Education will be based on the same criteria found in the student handbook.

*Those students, who are not prepared for class, will still be required to participate in physical activity.       

*The physical education department received a number of grants, which has allowed the department to purchase a classroom set of heart rate monitors.  The department will be using these monitors as another form of assessment.  You will be notified when this takes places during the year.

I understand and hereby acknowledge that participation in the activities registered for involve INHERENT RISKS AND HAZARDS. I VOLUNTARILY accept and assume all such RISKS AND HAZARDS and do hereby release Ladue School District from any and all liability including, but not limited to bodily injury, personal injury, and/or property damage and to save and hold harmless Ladue School District, its agents and employees from any and all claims, demands, or causes of action of whatsoever kind or nature resulting from my VOLUNTARY participation in said activities.

As the parent or legal guardian of the minor children listed on the course expectations page, I further understand and agree that:

1. I am responsible for their actions and that the above stated provisions of this WAIVER AND RELEASE OF LIABILITY apply to each of them, their heirs, successors, assigns, and legal representatives; and
2. Any future claims or charges, known or unknown, are barred should the minor child/children upon reaching the age of majority (age 18 and 21) attempt to bring a separate claim, demand or cause of action against Ladue School District.

During the course of the school year the physical education classes will take an occasional trip to Ladue High school to use some of their facilities.  Students will either be taken by bus or walked over with their teachers.

My child has my permission to go to Ladue High school during their physical education class.

For 7th and 8th Grade Students ONLY:
Students have the option to purchase a heart rate monitor strap of their own for the year.  The cost will be $15.00 per strap and will be a one-time purchase for their time here at the middle school.  The staff will have straps available if you decide to borrow instead of purchasing your own.  Please make all checks payable to Ladue Middle School.  If you have any questions please let us know.
